Two days later, after I’d caught up in school from my few days of purposeless depression, I sat in the kitchen with a notebook in front of me, biting the lid of my pen. Flop sat beside me, smoothing the sheets of paper under her fingers.

“Are you ready?”

I nodded but felt the panic in my chest that insisted I run away to the lake instead. How could I call Sean and ask him if I could use his pool? Flop insisted that Sean’s position as friend would make it impossible for him to refuse, but it felt wrong. I wasn’t over Sean.

“You can do this. You’ve practiced. Remember, no longer than five minutes, no matter how well it’s going, or how much you want to yell at him. Okay?”

I nodded and picked up the phone, dialing his number with shaking fingers. The clock read 11:36 p.m., one minute later than when he’d used to call. It rang seven times before he picked up. I almost dropped the phone when I heard his voice.

“Hello?” Sean sounded gruff and irritable. Just hearing his voice made me feel ten percent better.

“Hey. It’s Genevieve.” I sounded almost casual. I’d practiced fifty times. Flop nodded encouragingly.

“What’s going on? Did someone kidnap you?”

“As a matter of fact… not today,” I said with manic cheer that made Flop wince. I had to tone it down. “I called to ask you a question.”

Silence hung on the line until he finally said, “What do you want?”

“I’m looking for a pool. I want to practice my swimming technique.” Wow, did this sound as stupid to him as it did to me?

“Was that a question?”

I rolled my eyes. He didn’t have to be annoying. “No, Sean, I just called you up, someone who has an indoor pool when I’m looking for an indoor pool to ask a non question. So?”

“I’m sorry, you want to swim in my pool?”

“Wow. They weren’t lying when they called you a genius.”

“I guess…You want to swim like a human?”

“Yeah. Technique and all that.”

“You’re a terrible swimmer.”

I sighed. “I know. That’s kind of the point.”

“If you’d like to use the pool, I’m sure that I could make arrangements to get you a key and a passcode. What time did you want to go?”

“Ben said before swim practice. That’s a little bit crazy even for me, but why not?”

“Ben? You want to go swimming in my pool with one of my swimmers? Are you kidding me?”

His voice was rising impressively.

“No, I’m not kidding. You and I are just friends, right? He’s one of your friends too, so it shouldn’t be awkward at all.” Which is why it felt so not awkward.

“You dumped me less than a week ago, and now you want to go swimming with someone else in my pool? No. I can’t believe you’re asking me.”

He sounded ridiculously, dare I say it insanely, jealous. And possessive. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but my heart was pounding hard in my chest and I clung to the phone with both hands.
